Lance Allan: Sports Glance with Lance

Our Government Failed Us Again

Not Once, But Twice!

  • Print

I take a rare Friday off, and the local government goes nuts.  And yes, I'm just a sports guy.  But a sports guy that pays taxes, and believes in the basic rights of freedom in this great country and state.  They thought I wasn't watching, but this watchdog journalist couldn't let these gems go.

First, I get my Journal Sentinel in the morning...and the top story above the fold on the front page?  "Judge rules against Day of Prayer."

Now this isn't the first time that U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb has thumbed her nose at federal government, conventional wisdom or your wishes.  She knows everything, just ask her.  Since when do the wishes of 15,000 Freedom From Religion Foundation members, dictate the desires of more than 5 million Wisconsin residents?  And when have you ever heard the National Day of Prayer ever endorse one religion, one denomination, or one thought process?

And then the second whammy....and friends, it's not any better.  Whitewater Republican Steve Nass missed a key vote to expel Rep. Jeff Wood.  The vote?  Forced onto the floor at 4am Friday morning, by Wood himself.

The reason for Nass missing the vote?  He was attending the funeral services of his mother.  Yet it didn't stop Democrat Pedro Colon and Wood from criticizing Nass for missing the vote.

First, Wood should keep his mouth shut.  He rushed the vote that wasn't suppose to happen until Tuesday, because he was sentenced to 45 DAYS IN JAIL TODAY for driving under the influence.  And how insensitive of Colon.

This is the definition of petty politics.  Let's get to the business at hand, deal with the real issues of the day, and cut the petty issues.
