Prince: The $200 Million Dollar Man?
The Brewers Slugger Could Join Rare Club
In the last 30 years, there are only 6 times the 100 steal mark has been broken in baseball.
There are 3 members of baseball's 700 HR club.
But Prince Fielder could join an even more exclusive club. Along with Alex Rodriguez, is the Brewers slugger trying to become the $200 million man?
Well respected baseball writer and one-time Milwaukee resident Jon Heyman says someone close to the Fielder contract talks says the $184 million deal that Joe Mauer got....and the $180 million that Mark Teixeira got...could be just starting points.
I talked to Prince last week, and he kept repeating one key phrase...you'll have to talk to Scott. As in uber-agent Scott Boras, who won't take a dime less than market value. His other client Teixeira got $180 million. He's sure to try to push Prince into the $200 million stratosphere over an 8-year contract. If you're counting, that's merely $23 million less than what owner Mark Attanasio paid for the club just 6 years ago.
So Brewers fans, the main question is this. Is it worth it? Prince and Braun are the faces of the franchise. Prince is a draw. And ironically, Doug Melvin could become the only GM to sign two $200 million deals. He gave A Rod the $252 million in Texas.
The negative? Signing Prince to that type of deal means goodbye to most of the rest of the team. And I wouldn't fault Ryan Braun for saying 2 years into his 8-year deal, that his $51 million is under value.
Brewers fans...react to me! Emails at lallan@todaystmj4.com
