I was convinced Tiger Woods would never skip a major, especially the Masters.
Then I heard him read his statement, and I thought hmmmm.....maybe there's a chance he's out a little while longer.
Why did I allow myself to be fooled?
This guy merely played us with that prepared 13 and 1/2 minute speech to test the waters for his comeback. How foolish was I to think he might actually be serious enough about saving his marriage and making amends with his kids, that he might put aside his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus' record...even for one tournament.
His last statement was during the Accenture Match Play Championships, to stick it to the first sponsor that dropped him. Today's report steals what little bit of thunder the World Golf Championships have. If I was a sponsor or tournament organizer, I'd be furious. Do this stuff Monday-Wednesday...not when a tournament is going on.
And if you don't think it's deliberate, you're still fooling yourself. Get over it. Tiger plans everything in his life. You think he just wakes up and says today, I feel like playing golf? This has been weeks in the making. Hiring Ari Fleischer, the former White House Press Secretary that helped the Packers during their Brett Favre crisis and Mark McGuire during his dire hours shows that rehab has done little to tame Tiger's desire to control everything around him.
I'm sorry, I always respected the man for what he won. But he better come back with less arrogance, less club throwing and swearing, and a lot more respect for the game and others when he does play. Like he said in his statement, he claims he will bring a "greater respect to the game."
Because right now, he's not fooling me anymore.
