The Packers need a guaranteed pass rusher alongside emerging star Clay Matthews. And I'm convinced with the likelihood of an uncapped 2010 season, GM Ted Thompson will open up Packers checking (with a tip of the cap to Associated Bank) to get a sack master.
Just don't expect it to be disgruntled free agent Panthers Defensive End Julius Peppers.
Why? One, he's not "Packer People," as Thompson likes to call them. Too many squabbles with Carolina management over his contract.
Two, one of his big tiffs in Carolina was with the direction of the defense under then Defensive Coordinator Mike Trgovac. Yes, that Mike Trgovac. The current defensive line coach for the Packers. Not good.
And three, Peppers says he wants to try playing linebacker in a 3-4. But times where he's tried that, he hasn't looked as good as Aaron Kampman. And Kampman's cheaper.
It's nice to dream...and I think Ted will surprise with one or two good free agent signings this year. But I just don't want fans to get their hopes up on this one.
