Apparently I Struck A Nerve

Many Of You Have Issues With NBA Officials

  • Print

After a no-call charge by Kobe Bryant on Andrew Bogut and the Bucks, plenty of you vented about the star nature of calls in the NBA.

So if David Stern won't listen or doesn't care to change things, maybe he can at least read these gems:

Lance,

Your description of the play fails to take into account the extra 2 steps needed by Kobe to actually create the "blocking" call on Bogut.

Mike

I can’t agree with you more that the superstar calls ruin the NBA game.  That Bryant call cost the game for the Bucks plus missed free throws.  Well back to the high school and college game plus my son’s 8th grade games.

Larry

Totally agree. You Milwaukians need to be a little bit more rowdy...those refs would be ran out of Boston, NY, Philly.

Lance:

I agree with your blog 100%. I watched that game and was stunned by the number of ticky tack fouls.

What I find amazing is how horrible Milwaukee is, and in all honesty the fans are idiots! I would never purchase a ticket to a game where management says their goal is to make the playoffs, like the Bucks management. Your goal every year is to win a championship anything less is failure! I'll tell you this, I do believe about 75% of what Tim Donaghy has said publically. I'll tell you why I believe his story. The refs in the NBA on average make about $200,000 a season, they're no dummies, they see George Karl making $3,000,000 a year, Scott Skiles $4,000,000 , and then the players pulling in 4-5 million annually, you don't think they feel like they're getting shafted.

I've heard a lot of stories about Bavetta being crooked. Stern is trying to portray Donaghy as a liar, and I'm sure he has fabricated some things, but by in large I believe about 75% of what he has said.

Stern has a huge problem, namely that the public is starting view the NBA much like they view professional wrestling.

Stern had better get a hold of this, or it could be very damaging. Here are some things I would implement to better the NBA.

#1. Reduce the regular season from 82 games to 60 games. Have each team play a home and home, it would make the regular season more meaningful.

#2. Mandate that any team that has a below .500 record be ineligible for the playoffs, why should one be rewarded for mediocrity.

#3. Reduce the playoffs to one game series, with the team of the better record being the home team.

#4.  Hold a one game championship at a neutrel site, and each player on the winning team collects $1,000,000 for winning.

#5. Bring back the 5 fouls and you're out rule. sometimes the games get more interesting when star players foul out.

Chances are the league would never go this route because they like the revenue that 7 game series bring in, but that just goes to show you how crooked the league is.

The NBA reffing is awful. If they just called traveling and stopped making awful "star gets the nod" calls the NBA would be a lot more fun to watch. Any REAL basketball fan who saw the Bucks play the Sixers in the Eastern Conference Finals KNOWS that the only reason the Bucks didn't advance to the NBA finals is because AI had the star "nods" all series and the Bucks couldn't buy a call. Even the Big Dog, Ray and Sam couldn't get a call. Then Williams gets suspended. What a joke. We all know the Bucks were a better team which has been VERY RARE ever but that year the Bucks were the better team and was hosed by the refs.

The NBA reffing is a joke.

The NBA is rigged and Stern is a pompous @$$  that is full of himself. I do declare. I do declare.

If you need any more evidence on the officiating against the Bucks over the years check out this website www.nbarefstats.com

That call was atrocious as was the entire game and there were also numerous other poor calls.  It is unfortunate that Bucks not only have to win the game, but they need to conquer the officiating virtually every game.

If Kobe (or any other star for that matter) is so good, why give them the added advantage? And they are disingenuous at best when they say it doesn’t happen.

So much for my two cents.

Right on relative to your comments regarding the awful call in the Laker game. I watched it on T.V. (including replays) and thought he traveled big time before he got off the shot and ever even got around to barrelling into Bogut with what should have been an obvious charge.

I find myself attending/watching less and less NBA games because of this baloney (and I'm a Bucks fan from the beginning  -- saw the first game they ever played).  Its sad when pretty soon professional wrestling will have more credibility!!
