BRETT FAVRE: WHAT TO BELIEVE?

EVERY DAY THE WIND BLOWS A DIFFERENT WAY

  • Print

I'm thinking Yogi Berra might have said this at one point, so with apologies to the Baseball Hall of Famer, the only thing you can predict about sports...is that it's unpredictable.

Folks, a yo-yo, a waffler and a weather vane doesn't twist and turn and change direction as much as this Brett Favre comeback story, because it takes the cake.

Just think of it.  It all basically started with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune report saying Vikings Coach Brad Childress was going down to meet Favre at an undisclosed location.

Then a local TV camera in Minneapolis caught Chili walking into Viking headquarters, proving he never met with Brett face-to-face.

Then came the Yahoo.com report that Favre was going to stay retired.  Until the next day, when ESPN reported that X-rays were sent to the Vikings, and if major surgery wasn't required...he'd play again.

How about take three?  ESPN reports that Favre saw surgeon Dr. James Andrews.  The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the scheduled meeting was canceled.

And finally, after the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Favre would meet with Dr. Andrews on Tuesday and have surgery by the end of the week, ESPN comes out with another report saying Favre doesn't have an appointment with Dr. Andrews....and surgery isn't imminent, with ESPN again saying Favre talked to Dr. Andrews about surgical and non-surgical options.

This is insane.  Up, down, in, out. Take you pick.  My best guess is that a Vikings official leaked the surgery story to the Pioneer Press just to turn up the fire on Brett and get him to commit.  The Vikings have an OTA going this week...and Favre will miss the mandatory one at month's end...which means if he does play, he'll miss most of the sessions the Vikings wanted him to attend.  Surgery would also have him ready just in time for training camp.

So I'm thinking the next time something comes out, just wait 24 hours.  You'll hear the opposite reported by then.
