Season ticket holders and Packers fans, how would you feel about a 17-game regular season? Better yet, how about 18 games, and a guaranteed 9th home game at Lambeau every year?
That's what NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wants. Obviously, the preseason would be shortened...and I'm all for it.
I've said on Packers GameDay (the Packers pregame show) that the NFL should go to this. Who wants to see 4 preseason games, when NFL charges full price to watch the starters play a quarter, if that? It's the biggest sham for fans in pro sports. Two or at the most three preseason games is more than enough.
A 17-game schedule would need some discussion. It could allow each team to play one game per year internationally, or at a neutral venue. Or one conference could have 9 home games one year, and 8 the next.
Owners could vote on it in May, and it could be approved as soon as 2011.
Detractors say players would have a greater chance of injuries with a longer season but c'mon...how many times has a star or a good player gotten hurt in a meaningless exhibition tilt? I'm all for a longer regular season...as long as they only have one week in between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl.
