PACKERS FREE AGENCY
So the Packers free agency period began.
And no, that's not me...and I'm not joking. I was told that one member of the Packers personnel department dozed off before the free agency period started Thursday night at 11 o'clock, so that ought to tell you all you need to know about Ted Thompson's approach to free agency.
But honestly, this isn't meant as a slam to Ted. Colin Cole getting $6 million guaranteed, and up to $21 million total? God bless the guy, I like him but he's not worth that. Chris Canty, $17 million guaranteed, $42 million total? The product level doesn't warrant that, and I don't blame Ted and company for taking a pass. Especially when he wants to keep Greg Jennings...and Aaron Kampman...and has labor strife looming with a possible uncapped year in the NFL on the horizon.
Now if GM Ted doesn't make a play for Igor Olshansky...or LB Clark Haggans...or keep Mark Tauscher, I won't be nearly as kind.
As for the other big story in the NFL, my thoughts and prayers go out to Bruce Cooper, the lost boater and father of missing Raiders LB Marquis Cooper. Coop works for the NBC affliate in Phoenix with my good buddy Kevin Hunt....I can't imagine being in Coop's shoes and I won't put myself there, but he's one of the most decent human beings I know...so Coop, we're thinking of you during this difficult time.
