I know you're not glued to your TV 24-7, so here's a little summary of Super Bowl Sunday. When I was at the last Super Bowl the Packers played in (Super Bowl XXXII), I left with the feeling that it was so surreal, the entertainment package almost overshadowed the game. So here's news of the game, and news of the strange:
1:15pm Mike Holmgren and Tony Dungy are on. Both seem very comfortable turning to the dark side of the media.
1:45pm That Tom guy from Top Chef is on. Suddenly my wife is interested.
2pm Bob Costas tells Bruce Springsteen you won't jump on the piano like 20 years ago. Bruce challenges Bob to a 20 yard dash to see who does it quicker. Now that I'd like to see uptight Bob do!
2:45pm The Rock is on. To me, he's the Rock. Dwayne Johnson, know your role and shut your mouth...the Rock sounds better. Just go with it!
3:20pm That guy sure sounds like Steve Perry...and that band sounds like Journey. Well, it's Journey...and if you saw the wonderful story on the CBS Early Morning news a few months back, the new lead singer sang in a cover band in the Phillippines, and now is getting to live the dream. I've done Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc on karaoke nights....I don't see anyone clammering for me to replace one of the stars of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
4:15pm Matt Lauer says to Barack Obama, tell the people of Florida, and their 27 electoral votes, that they need a playoff and they're not the national champs. President Obama says wouldn't the people of Florida want to know their Gators could beat everyone? The man knows how to deflect and answer tough questions already!
4:30pm The good and bad of Holmy. Bad, he says the Cardinals can't turn the ball over. No duh. The good, he said the Cardinals can't let the Steelers score on the first drive, and if they do, the Cardinals are in a world of hurt. Now that's solid.
4:40pm Great feature on Larry Fitzgerald. One of the only former Viking ball boys I can like and pull for....
5pm At this point, I don't care what's going on...can we just start the game?
5:10pm I suddenly remember...this is the first time the Super Bowl has been on Today's TMJ4/NBC since the Packers lost to the Broncos...which helps me shamelessly plug that I caught up with William Henderson, Dorsey Levens, Santana Dotson and Gilbert Brown this week as I emceed the Henderson retirement roast. Great memories, and great to see those guys again...so check it out after the Super Bowl.
5:15pm Kurt Warner is the NFL Man of the Year. Shouldn't they just retire this award and put his name on it, every year?
5:20pm Oregon pilot Jeffrey Skiles and Chesley Sullenberger from the US Airways flight that plunged into the Hudson River are honored. The rest of my life, I will be amazed at what these men and their crew did to protect the lives of everyone on that flight.
5:32pm Second play of the game, Hines Ward....38 yard reception. The man can still do it...I remember him running, catching, throwing and wrecking Wisconsin in the Hall of Fame Bowl back in 1998...final score 33-6. I also remember Eric Franke of WISC in Madison and yours truly polishing off a Bloomin' Onion in the press box during the second half.
5:40pm Holmy looks like a genius. Arizona's in trouble if the Steelers march down the field and punch in a TD...oh wait, review, no TD....Steelers kick a FG. Holmgren wonders where was this challenge back in 2005. Office pools all over America, torn up and tossed in outrage...
5:48pm I just checked out the Michael Phelps photos. Not good, dude.
5:52pm The Conan ad, hilarious. Always remember my friends, it's a bad premise when someone tells you this won't be seen by a widespread audience. And the new Jack Black movie Year One? The trailer makes me think it will be in theaters week one...and pulled shortly after that.
6pm Hey, former Packer TE Sean McHugh gets a mention...nice crushing block on a Willie Parker run. Playing for the Lions for a little while, Sean did his penance...he deserves a Super Bowl and a mention!
6:07pm Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost? Looks awesome. Doritos ad? Pretty funny. But can someone tell me what Danica Patrick is thinking on the Go Daddy ads? A recent speeding ticket, but this is a much worse offense. I want an apology from the woman who ripped me when I did the first story on her when she raced at the Milwaukee Mile, and I showed one of her "racy" shots to say she's not afraid of promoting herself that way. Believe me now?
6:10pm Gary Russell punches it in. I might be premature, but I'm calling it. Game over. To quote Dennis Green, the Cardinals "ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!"
6:20pm I said I might be premature...I was. What a catch by Ben Patrick...at first I thought that was Larry Fitzgerald. 10-7 Pitt but the Cards have finally answered after getting punched in the mouth...
6:35pm Pedigree adoption ad....also funny.
6:43pm Ad about boxed flowers...lost me. Not effective.
6:55pm Cardinals closing in...what a game changer! James Harrison, I'm calling it...the longest play in Super Bowl history! You can't deny the man on the review!
6:56pm What do these broadcast guys know...finally they mention that it's the longest play in SB history...100 yards....and the review is huge. Will it be a 3 point lead, and half over....or a 10 point advantage? It's ruled a TD....Steelers up 17-7 with all momentum in the world.
7pm Monsters vs. Aliens...not bad with the 3D glasses. Just don't expect me to wear them out in public.
7:10pm OK, I'm already wrong on the first Springsteen song...but I love how he slid into the camera! Hopefully the photog doesn't have a concussion.
7:25pm Overall, a good halftime show. I'm sure some people will be wetting their pants over it...but I thought it was good, not great.
7:50pm Man, the Cardinals are self destructing. Three personal foul penalties. They're lucky to only give up a field goal out of that.
7:55pm Careerbuilder.com...can't forget those ads, sometimes for the wrong reasons!
8:20pm Man, these aren't your father's Cardinals. Larry Fitzgerald seems to jump over tall buildings...and they will not go away. 20-14 halfway through the fourth quarter....we have ourselves a ball game!
8:44pm Wow! This Super Bowl is destined to go down as one of the best now. A holding call in the end zone? Safety...and the Cardinals get the ball.
8:50pm Larry Fitzgerald, you might be going to Disney World. There's no doubt who's the best receiver in the NFL...he's going for distance, he's going for speed...they caught the Steelers blitzing. Packers beware...that's the #1 defense in the league...if you don't have the horses to get to the quarterback, you can get burned like that....a lot.
9:02pm Santonio Holmes already made one great catch. Now triple coverage? Hands like glue? Both toes down? David Tyree, Max McGee and Lynn Swann, move over...you have to make room in the Super Bowl catch Hall of Fame!
9:15pm After all of those dog Super Bowls, how about back to back ones that will go down as two of the best ever. The improbable run of the Cards, coming from 13 down...but the Steelers make a comeback for the ages. Pittsburgh now all alone with 6 Super Bowl titles....winning 27-23. Wow.
