You've heard your parents say it...
I used to walk to school 4 miles, up hill, both ways...
We used to break rocks with our bare hands....
Winters were always worse than this....
Well, I'm going to bore my kids and grandkids with the story that gives me scoreboard on this cold weather. Chuck Norris and I laugh at what you call cold...because I've been in colder conditions!
People in sports talk about the Ice Bowl. That was before I was born, but I did cover and was on the field for the LeRoy Butler Lambeau Leap game (-1), the Packers game in Chicago last year and the NFC Championship.
Well, that's all child's play compared to the 1994 Eagle River Snowmobile Derby. I was a cub reporter, my first job at WJFW in Rhinelander. That year was the first time they tried to have night races. Well, just a few hours before the sleds hit the track, a front came through.
Actual temperature? -25. A constant 20-25 mph wind made the wind chills between -50 and -70. And if you click on the video link, you'll see it...I was shooting the race with a tube camera, and it was so cold the gases in the tubes were freezing, making the video turn pink!
Now I dare you...if you have a story to top that, bring it at lallan@todaystmj4.com
