On September 1st, the Packers got rid of Jon Ryan.
Three months to the day, they finally realize their mistake...putting the boots, to Derrick Frost.
This, my friends, clearly falls at the feet of Ted Thompson and Mike Stock. I mean, Frost was brought in to pin the opponent deep. He had 8 inside the 20....tied for 29th in the league! Jon Ryan might have outkicked the coverage, but at least he had the leg to do it. And when you check in with what he's doing in Seattle...his average punt is more than 46 yards. His net punt is 38.5 yards...not bad. And he has 14 inside in the 20....that's 1-4! Nearly double the so-called "directional" punter!
Here's more food for thought. Stock calculates that the Packers special teams gave up 187 yards in the field position battle against the Saints...and 231 against the
Panthers. And a chunk of that goes back to getting rid of special teams ball hawk Tracy White.
I get the sense Mike McCarthy is a little ticked from time to time that he is the man who has to take the bullets for the personnel decisions, when GM Thompson rarely addresses the media. And he's not pleased about Stock's recommendation to switch punters, so there's probably a good chance Stock is gone at year's end.
And how about that defense...giving up 86 points in back-to-back weeks? The most in consecutive games since that infamous 1-10-1 Scooter McLean season of 1958. That's 50 years of bad history to tie, folks.
Time to think warmer and more pleasant thoughts...Brewers pitchers and catchers report to Arizona on Friday, February 13th. The full squad practices for the first time on February 17th. The first game is February 25th. Anyone have tickets already?
What a sad story about former UW defensive back Leonard Taylor. He's accused of leaving dozens of voicemail messages threatening to kill his former coach and current AD Barry Alvarez. Taylor suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, and stopped taking his medication and treatment a few months back. Here's hoping he gets some help.
And finally, the WNBA is folding the Houston Comets, the team that won the first 4 league championships. And you can hear a pin drop. Anyone else in favor of folding the whole league?
