Lance Allan: Sports Glance with Lance

THIS MIGHT BE THE FUTURE OF FOOTBALL

FOR YOUR KIDS

What a week for high school football!

Arrowhead and Homestead part three.  Two of the best coaches in the state, Tom Taraska and Dave Keel splitting the last two meetings.

Cedar Grove-Belgium in unpredecented territory....13-0 and going for a Division 5 title.

And I can't remember the last time our viewing area had a team in the smallest division...but Burlington Catholic Central will represent in Division 7.

And then there's what happened in Chippewa Falls recently.  The first 9-man football game in Wisconsin's history...and the first modified game (less than 11 players) since the 1960's when 8-man football was being played.

Bruce beat Alma Center Lincoln 56-30.  It was high scoring, exciting, and a rousing success.

Organized by New Auburn, the hope is that this will spark struggling small school programs, and give them hope.  Basically it's football without tackles...something small schools, and schools that have low numbers of athletes go out for football should look into...maybe like Shorewood-Messmer, two schools that combined and still struggle to get enough numbers to compete....playing a non-WIAA schedule this season.

It's a faster game, with 3 down linemen.  The offenses used by Bruce and Alma Center Lincoln were the wishbone...the spread...and the Wing T.  I love it.

I'm not a big fan of Minnesota...but they've had 9-man football for years.  It's time for the Badger state to follow suit.
