At 8am on Thursday morning, I was running errands and I mentioned to 7 different people that the Brewers were going to name Ken Macha manager, with a likely press conference that afternoon.
Of those people, all 7 wanted Bob Brenly....and 6 of the 7 wanted to know what happened when Macha didn't come here in 2002 and stayed in Oakland.
As far as Brenly goes, he's definitely more fan and media friendly...so we'll see how Macha fares as an on-field manager. And Macha and Melvin deny that he was ever offered the job, although he appeared like Melvin's choice over Ned Yost, and many people still
believe he stayed with the A's because it was a better opportunity.
Now for your views...and most aren't positive....first up Steve Fiege from Watertown:
From being a Brewers fan over the last thirty years I could understand getting rid of Ned Yost after another struggling season, But I really have a sour taste with Doug Melvin and the front office on replacement of Dale Svuem, I really think he was the right one to stick with after turning the team around and getting into the playoffs, I hope not, but I have a feeling it will be back to the drawing board and another long season with Ken Macha. I would have liked to see Dale run a full season after this last half of 2008!!!!!!!!!
Nathaniel Smith goes even stronger:
I think this question needs to be addressed...concerning why Doug Melvin chose Ken Macha. It gives the impression of tunnel vision and to be truthful not an inspiring choice of candidates to lead the team in 2009.
In fact, one of the only positive notes I could find came from Brad Keenan from Sheboygan:
Overall a good choice. He had three 90-win seasons out of four in Oakland, making the playoffs twice. Even though he hasn’t had much post season luck, only winning one post season series with Oakland, he still has more wins than Yost in the postseason, heck even Sveum has more wins than Yost in the postseason! I think the players will respond well to Macha. He has a rich Baseball past including being in Japan so he’s done it all. Hopefully Attanasio can expand the payroll so that we could sign CC, would be nice!
