Lance Allan: Sports Glance with Lance

THE BREWERS SEASON DOESN'T END FOR YOU FANS

NEWS & NOTES ON THE CREW

Just can't wait for Opening Day April 7th in San Fran?  Or the Home Opener against the Cubs on April 10th?  Sick of the playoffs?

Well, here's some food for thought Brewers fans, and most of it comes from you.  First, loyal reader Jennifer Roux writes:

I think that we as Brewers fans have truly been lucky, and children all over should take note: we watched an athlete that comes along very rarely in one’s lifetime. He is a competitor at the heart of it all, not worried about what he can do for HIMSELF, but rather how he could help this TEAM.  I am in awe.

Jennifer, I couldn't have said it better myself.  Even if the man signs elsewhere, he provided memories that will last a lifetime, and didn't care if pitching on 3 days rest four straight times would affect his contract status.  It would be one of the few times I'd be happy giving someone $150 million!

Tony Gianforte writes:

What about Sheets as the closer next year?   Milwaukee ’s version of Kerry Wood.  Might be worth the gamble, if he would do it.  We gave Gagne $10m and that went no where.  He is not a #1 pitcher, frankly never has been, only for the fact he was with the brewers, #1 starters are dependable, he has never been, period.

At this point, Sheets is better that Wood because he hasn't had major elbow/arm problems.  Plus Sheets definitely wants to start.  Plus Sheets told me in the clubhouse after the final game that he thinks he's gone, so don't expect him back.

This week, I'm hearing Brewers owner Mark Attanasio and GM Doug Melvin have at least talked about a contract extension.  That's a very good thing, with Melvin going into the final year of his deal.  Now Melvin heads to Arizona to talk with Dale Sveum.  My guess is that Sveum returns.

And finally, let's end with a picture.  In one of the final games against Pittsburgh, Adam LaRoche hit a homer to right center.  I grabbed the ball, and gave it to a young Brewers fan named Amy who promptly chuck it nearly all the way to Rickie Weeks at center.  Everybody gasped, what an arm!  And what a 28th birthday party!
