Lance Allan: Sports Glance with Lance

CC SABATHIA IS A FREAK

THAT'S POSITIVE, HE'S NOT HUMAN

  • Print

You can point to the stats, and say that since July 8th, CC Sabathia leads the National League in ERA, complete games, shutouts, and innings pitched.

But quite frankly, numbers don't tell the whole story.  CC is a mountain of a man...and coming up 300 pounds of huge for the Crew.

Seriously, Mike Caldwell eat your heart out...because this guy could be on the 1982 World Series team.  He's a throwback.  Throw the contract thoughts out...he's here to pitch, and help this team win before he worriest about next year.

CC claims he's never pitched on short rest.

Yet there he is, in a contract year, poised to have the Brinks truck pull up to his house...and he's pitched his last 2 starts on 3-days rest.

And I love it...as fans of other teams are freaking out, thinking he'll have a dead arm next year...CC doesn't care.  He wants the ball, and he wants it now.  Just ask Dale Sveum, who thought he was taking him out after 6...and ended up letting him go 7 against the Pirates.

And check the rotation...he'll have the ball for the likely deciding game on Sunday, once again on 3 days rest, with Yovani Gallardo going Thursday, Jeff Suppan Friday, and Ben Sheets or Dave Bush on Saturday.

Just think...on a night when the Brewers get 2 hits, they had every reason to fall.  But CC wouldn't let them fail by willing the team to victory, gutting out 7 strong innings while striking out 11 and allowing just 1 run.

That's called being a man.  His 10-2 record in his 16 Brewers starts, with a 1.78 ERA shows that.  But his heart proves it.

You know what?  Who cares if he stays next year.  He'll always have a special place in Brewers lore in my book, just by what he's doing now.  And Brewers fans, no matter where he goes next season...you should feel the same gratitude.  Enjoy him while he's here.

I know the Brewers do.  They're untucking 'em and jumping for joy!
