THERE IS HOPE FOR SUMMER TV

THE OLYMPICS AN OASIS IN A WASTELAND

  • Print
Maybe I shouldn't bite the hand that feeds me...but normally, if I had the choice between milking a goat, and watching most of what's on TV in the summer...you'd find me with a pail in the barn, if you get my drift. But the ratings numbers don't lie..America loves the Olympics, with an average of 30 million people tuned in every night. American Idol numbers, minus the annoying, nameless, close to talentless karaoke singers. I know nearly everyone looks at the track & field competition with a suspicious eye, almost like the all steroid olympics of Saturday Night Live fame. But still, the first week of drama has been more than enough for your Mamma. Consider: Michael Phelps record 8 golds in a single Olympics, including the record tying 7th that even had his Mom thinking he finished second. We knew West Allis native Chellsie Memmel had a bad injury. No one knew she competed on a BROKEN ankle. Incredible! How about a first ever women's gymnastics 1-2 finish in the all-around, with Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson? And Usain Bolt, 30 meters from the finish...stylin' and profilin' all while still setting a world record in the 100 meters, all while wearing the golden slippers. Yeah, no Phelps, Memmel or other inspiring stories this week...but we have another week to go to find the next set of Olympic heros, and I can't wait. Men's basketball with Michael Redd, more track and field, it should be more than enough! Emails at lallan@todaystmj4.com
