The road from Milwaukee to Omaha...well, let's just say it's not like the yellow brick road from Wizard of Oz fame. So to pass the time as I make the trek across America's Heartland to cover the Badgers, I jotted down some key observations:
I said to a co-worker after the Bucks horrific loss to the Heat, that since I was leaving town, someone would probably pay the price with their job. Sure enough, for the second year in a row, someone gets fired. Larry Harris canned as I hit the road...last year, Terry Stotts was fired as I was set to leave for Chicago to cover Wisconsin. Members of the Bucks organization now shutter when I leave town with UW.
A co-worker said to me that driving through Iowa during the day or night is about the same. I couldn't agree more, so that's why I chose to do most of it at night. I also didn't realize the state smelled this bad. It seems like everyone decided to fertilize, if you know what I mean.
Did you know that there's a town called What Cheer, Iowa? What, because you cheer when you leave?
I'm still looking for Marlin Perkins and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.
The Badgers road couldn't be much worse...if they make it out of Omaha, Detroit comes next.
More to come from Nebraska...and you can e-mail me ideas to keep me occupied or more topics of conversation at lallan@todaystmj4.com.
