By now, you've all seen the ugly brawl at Tech High School, between Tech and Bay View students, students and police officers, and the officers trying to protect a student having a seizure.
Before we blame this on MPS...let's stop right there. People forget that in 1999, a Tosa East player punched a Milwaukee Marquette coach after a close, hard fought game.
What this is, in large part, is a failure on the home front. It doesn't matter how much or how little money you have. Just look at Eagles Coach Andy Reid's situation. On the same day one of his sons was found with drug paraphernalia, his other son was accused of pulling a gun on another motorist.
The common thread? Kids crying out for their parents. NFL coaches work morning, noon and night. If kids can't talk to their Dad, they're going to turn to someone or something else to fill the void in their life.
I'm certainly not a perfect Dad...but as the parent of a 4-year-old daughter and 16 month old twin boys, I want them to know that I'm there for them...and I try to be at as many important events in their lives as I can attend.
At Bay View's first game after the brawl, players could only get 2 tickets for parents or guardians. Our reporter at the game, Lauren Lemanczyk told me she found just one parent in the crowd.
I realize that with work schedules and the hectic lifestyle of today, 100 percent attendance is impossible...this isn't the era of Leave It To Beaver or Happy Days. But that's sad...and parents, it needs to stop. Get involved in the life of your son or daughter...and make a difference.
