Packers Preview

49ers and the Season

  • Print

So the Packers haven't beaten the 49ers since the 1998 playoffs.  Eight straight wins including the postseason.

I'll say it will be 9 by Sunday night, in a 27-24 nailbiter.

But a few things have to go right in order for that to happen:

1.  Win the battle of the tight ends.  Jermichael Finley could be a huge weapon to slice through and crack the tough San Fran D, and the Packers need Nick Perry and others to be able to run with Vernon Davis, the man I said the Packers should have taken back in the 2006 draft.

2.  Keep Aaron Rodgers upright.  The pass protection needs to be tight.  The starting 5 offensive linemen need to stay healthy, because there's very little depth behind them.

3.  Randy Moss.  He might not be what he once was, but I'm not going to pull the wool over your eyes.  I along with everyone else who is honest has no idea what he has left in the tank, because the Niners have been vanilla and cryptic with the way they will use him.  Even if he's not nearly as good, all it takes is one long TD with that San Fran D to turn the tide.

4.  Stop the run.  With B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett ailing, this might be tough.  But they need those big boys in order to have a chance against 220 pound Frank Gore and even bigger 264 pound Brandon Jacobs.

As for the season, I say 11-5 in a tougher NFC and a Super Bowl appearance and victory over the Patriots.
