When the Packers second best pass rusher Cullen Jenkins left in free agency for the Eagles, the defense didn't have another guy who could push the pocket, and force opposing quarterbacks to step into another player like Clay Matthews, Erik Walden, or B.J. Raji to clean up the mess.
And the departure showed with just 29 sacks, the third worst total in the NFL and only better than the Titans and Buccaneers.
Like Linebackers Coach and HOF Finalist Kevin Greene said to Clay Matthews in Super Bowl 45, it is time! Time to unleash the Claymaker against the Giants, and time for Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers to dial up the pressure with the amoeba package or other formations he's kept under wraps for awhile.
Clay can't do it alone. And you can't blitz every play, or the already shaky secondary will need flame retardant suits for fear of getting burned. But they can't let strong armed QB Eli Manning burn them in the back end of the D. Because as one wise NFL scout told me, the only QB's that can win in the cold have strong arms.
Manning's done it once at Lambeau Field. The Packers don't want him to prove it again.
