Penn State or State Pen?

Biggest Scandal In NCAA Football

  • Print

Fronting a children's charity, to commit crimes against those same vulnerable children?  It's safe to say, former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky has committed the biggest scandal in NCAA football history, and changed Penn State Nittany Lions colors for the soon-to-be orange jump suit of the State Pen.

But how much did Joe Paterno know?  Did college football's winningest Division I football coach try to protect a friend, by bringing this to one official, and then letting it go?  And how bad does it make Joe Pa look, if he was out of the loop on most of this stuff?  It raises serious questions as to if Paterno should be going to practice and coaching his team this Saturday against Nebraska.

The man I gained tremendous respect for in all this is former Penn State LB Matt Millen.  I've been highly critical of ESPN.  And Millen is arguably the worst GM in NFL history.  But his raw emotion, breaking down twice, feeling betrayed and calling for his former mentor Paterno's immediate removal if he knew more than he's letting on?  Some of the best TV and best show of character I've seen on that channel in years.  Millen said he'd like to take care of the problem himself.  You get the sense he'd like to whoop somebody.

In the meantime, the games will go on.  Wisconsin could benefit from all the distractions. since the Badgers need Penn State to lose to either Nebraska or Ohio State, and then UW beat Penn State at the end of the conference slate with Ohio State losing to Michigan or someone else one more time, so the Badgers could make the Big Ten Championship Game.

It could happen.
