As a union rep, Charles Woodson has great perspective on both the NFL labor and Wisconsin labor fronts. And now we get them in an exclusive one-on-one interview at the Lombardi Ball for cancer research at the Pfister Hotel.
Click on the video link for the thoughts of the Packers cornerback, but as for the NFL front, Charles says:
"This game is too great. It's too great a game for the owners, players, and whoever else to let if fall by the wayside because we're bickering about whatever. It's a great game, love to play it, and I believe they'll do what's right in the end."
As for the 18-game schedule, which seems to be off the table: "No, I'm not ok with it. It's one of those things, is that part of the compromise or is it not part of the deal. I don't know but it is a tough game. It's hard on you. I would not be pleased doing an 18-game schedule. My deal is, if you did go to 18, you have to guarantee contracts. Health care has got to be a lifetime deal. Not in favor of it. There will definitely have to be some concessions made, we understand that, so we'll see what happens."
As for what's going on in Madison? "I believe in people's rights. The thing I've never understood how much people hate government workers. I never understood that until now. But first and foremost, the fundamental issue of it, I feel strongly about people's rights."
When I followed up with the fact that some would say Woodson and other athletes make millions, so what would they have in common with the general public worker, Woodson added, "But we're talking about rights. Whether you're fighting for a fair share, or whether you're fighting for better health care coverage, it doesn't matter. It's about a right to have that option to fight for something better. And if you're in a situation, and you don't feel like the working conditions or the way you're treated or whatever is not right....then you should have a right to fight for it."
