Lance Allan: Sports Glance with Lance

The Packers and the Ref

And others nuggets from the locker room

The referee for the NFC Championship Game is Terry McAulay.

Now normally this isn't big news, until you realize that this is the same Terry McAulay that whistled the Packers for a franchise record 18 penalties in a week 3 loss to the Bears.

To Mike McCarthy's credit, he's calling that flag day an "anomaly," but he also mentioned that the Packers had 18 penalties that day, to the Bears 5.  Now that's sending a message.

Another interesting take from the head coach is when I asked him if the Bears defense is more effective this year because in addition to playing cover 2, they also mix in some man coverage.  McCarthy immediately started his statement by saying the Bears defense is the best D they've faced all year.  You can't argue with the Packers scoring just 3 offensive TD's in 2 games.

It's amazing to think that Ryan Pickett and Charles Woodson have played in Super Bowls, and lost.  And John Kuhn won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Steelers practice squad, and that's it.  In talking to Pickett yesterday, he's telling guys he made it his rookie year...and never been back.  That's 10 years, and big Ryan laughed and said, "that's a long time."
