Carole Meekins: Positively Milwaukee

Angel Remembered

Ava Zimmerman Memorial

  • Print

This weekend a statue was dedicated in honor of Ava Zimmerman.

It went up in the Greendale intersection where the 5-year-old was killed by a car three months ago. Ava died while walking other family members as they crossed Broad Street near Northway.

Local businesses worked together to dedicate the area to little Ava. They paid for the statue and the ceremony.

The memorial is a permanent reminder of a little girl who died too soon. Ava's mother bravely spoke at the ceremonies. Tanya Zimmerman told the crowd her daughter "loved the area and everything it represents."

Zimmerman said the statue will celebrate Ava's life. Those who knew Ava describe her as a little girl with a big heart and beautiful smile.

The business owners who helped pay for the dedication deserve a nod. Their kind gesture shows that in a world filled with pain and sorrow, rarely do you grieve alone. And when I saw the colorful balloons released against a bright blue summer sky, I couldn't help but think that little Ava is smiling down from heaven.
