This unbelievable month is coming to an end and according to proverbs it should go out like a lion tomorrow since it came in like a lamb. It should be a furious beast since most of the month was a summer paradise with an average monthly temperature of nearly 50 degrees…or 16 degrees above normal. We had a few cold days this past week with wind chills in the 20s on Monday and temperatures near freezing Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning, and we had inland patchy frost Thursday morning that could have zapped a lot of trees, shrubs and flowers as they are budding. We will have to watch this very carefully the next few weeks as we can see frost into May.
Milwaukee’s average day of last frost is April 27but the latest freeze is May 27back in 1961 with a low of 29. This is why we always warn not to plant gardens until Memorial Day weekend, but I have a feeling many will have those gardens planted early and just have to cover them up on the chilly nights in late April and early May.
After rain showers and 40s & 50s today, Saturday will be sunny and near 60 and Sunday will be sunny and in the mid 70s. Gardeners may get itch to start planting this weekend…all of my neighbors have already mowed their lawn…earliest that they can remember.
