Brian Gotter: Welcome Back, Gotter

Spring forecast was right on

  • Print

A few months ago I wrote about the 90 day Spring Outlook from the Climate Prediction Center and I also stated I usually feel like the opposite occurs from what is predicted…not this spring.  The prediction was for a cool and wet spring and everyone will agree it was just that.  The outlook could have just said nasty and that would have been a perfect forecast.

Since April, every month has been 1 to 2 degrees below normal and we are about 3.5” above normal for rain (that is feels like we should be 12" above normal with all the grey days), however, as bad as it felt most days, this past spring was the 68th coldest for Milwaukee since records have been kept back in 1871.  That means 67 springs were worse than this past spring.  Yikes!  Every spring we get spoiled with nice days in the 70s and 80s, but those days were very rare this year.  The warmest day in March was 65.  Milwaukee hit 80 once in April and no 70s.  May had 5 days in the 70s and 80s and two of those were the last days of the month.  June started out hot with 3 record breaking days in the mid and upper 90s…at that point; June was 7 degrees above normal…2 weeks later, the month is now 1 degree below normal.  There is good news, 70s and 80s are in the forecast all week and the two week outlook is for normal temperatures and drier conditions.
