Breaking News!

By Shelley Walcott

Wednesday morning started out innocently enough.

There I was in the makeup room doing makeup with Molly and Alison from "Morning Blend."

"Hope you have a quiet day," one of them said.

That's usually the kiss of death.

And it didn't take long for fate to intervene.

We were in our morning meeting when news broke that a Milwaukee police officer had been shot.

In the news biz, that's DEFCON 1.

You know how people are in accidents, and blank out for a period of time?

Well before I knew it my photographer and I were standing on a street corner on the north side, watching officers seal off a perimeter with tape.

And before I knew it again, my photographer and a few officers were having a discussion, and he was slapped in handcuffs and carted away.

And there I was, all alone at the breaking news.   Gunman still on the loose too.

I called the station.

(Sorry... the ensuing conversation is classified to TMJ4 employees only.)

Shortly after hanging up with our news desk, I picked up the phone again.

This time, to call in and do a "phoner" with Vince Vitrano.

What's a phoner you ask?  That's when your live truck isn't on scene...  but your anchor is on air.

So you call in on your cell phone, to let viewers know everything you see, everything you know.

Soon some of my colleagues joined me in the field... Scott Steeele, Mel Stout, various photogs and a producer.

I was really happy to see them.  There is strength in numbers.

Oh.. and my original photog was eventually back out in the street with us too.

We did our reporting jobs... filed for the noon, 5 and 6... then strutted on home.

Just another day at the office.

Never a dull moment with breaking news!
