Shelley Walcott: Don't Tell The BossThe Ultimate Fair FoodBy Shelley WalcottMove over cream puffs! There's a new State Fair favorite in town. Everyone's buzzing about chocolate covered bacon on a stick! To be honest, it didn't sound very appetizing when I first heard about it. It's the creation of the talented team from Pewaukee-based Machine Shed Restaurant, which specializes in huge portions of comfort food. This is Machine Shed's first year at Wisconsin State Fair, and they wanted to stand out... be different. Hence, chocolate bacon on a stick. So how do you make it? First, they choose a nice, thick slice of hardwood-smoked, honey-cured bacon and stick it on a skewer. Then, the bacon is baked, to ensure extra crispiness. Next step: coat the bacon with milk chocolate, freeze it, then a little sprinkle of sea salt to bring out the salty bacon taste under the chocolate. The verdict? I thought it was scrumptious! Sort of tastes like chocolate-covered pretzels. And Machine Shed has gone even further in their quest for the perfect fair food. They've also been whipping up fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches... also on a stick. Each sandwich is dipped in pancake batter, then dunked in hot oil. Our reporter Michael George told me it tastes a lot like a jelly doughnut.. with peanut butter. He swears it's delicious. So let's give it up to Machine Shed for originality. They have successfully made their mark at State Fair. I can hardly wait to see what they think up next year! |
