Shelley Walcott: Don't Tell The BossThe Video That Made Me ShudderBy Shelley WalcottAs an anchor/reporter I have witnessed many disturbing things during the course of doing my job... both in the field and from the anchor desk. But this evening, I saw something that made me lean against a wall, I was so numb by the horror of it. It was video of a four-year-old boy trapped in a burning car. People yelling and screaming... desperately trying to save him. An off-duty firefighter crawls into the car several times, risking his own life as he tries to cut the boy loose. The sound of people screaming, the car sizzling and tires exploding are clearly audible. The boy is finally rescued... some of his scalded flesh hanging off his body. It was a dramatic rescue caught on tape... like a horrible scene from a movie. It just makes me shake. It just makes me want to cry. It's hard to separate yourself from these types of stories. Ever since I had children, stories about children in trouble disturb me more than they ever had before. Every child becomes your child. But what also struck me about this video were all the incredible people in that south side neighborhood who fought as hard as they could to save that boy. Again... some stories just knock you off your feet. And make you want to hold your own kids a little closer. |
