The Fabric of the Nation

Wasn't Cindy McCain's debut outfit at the Republican Convention last Tuesday simply to die for?

Well, the actual pricetag of her ensemble may just put you into cardiac arrest...

The fashionistas over at Vanity Fair Magazine priced out the buttercup-yellow shirt dress and its accoutrements

The pricetag?  A whopping $313,000!!!  That's more than three times the yearly income of the average American family.

Here's the breakdown of Cindy McCain's outfit:

  • Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
  • Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
  • Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
  • Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000 - $25,000
  • Shoes, designer unknown : $600

Talk about bling!  I couldn't seem to track down the cost of John McCain's suit.  But when your wife is worth $100 million, chances are it was quality stuff.

And they're not exactly wearing rags over on the Democratic side either...

Remember that lovely aquamarine dress Michelle Obama wore the night of her speech to Democrats?   It was crafted by a lesser known designer by the name of Mara Pinto.  Michelle Obama says she regularly wear's Pinto's frocks on the stump.  One dress she wore back in June was priced at around $900!  As for Barack Obama, the suit he wore the night he accepted his historic spot on the Democratic ticket wasn't exactly off-the-rack.  It was a custom-made Hart Schaffner Marx number.... a two-button suit made of wool that cost about $1,500.  Which isn't exorbitant, but certainly far from average.

So as much as the candidates like to say that they are "just like us" the truth is when it comes to affording fashion, they are cut from a different cloth.
