Crazy Cravings!

By Shelley Walcott

I acted like the stereotypical pregnant woman the other night...

It was about 4 o'clock in the morning and I just couldn't sleep.  My husband, on the other hand, was fast asleep.  I really didn't want to bother him, but frankly I needed some company and I was really craving a bowl of ice cream.  French Vanilla ice cream.  It was in the freezer, calling out to me.

So I nudged him.   "Honey," I said, "I can't sleep.  Would you get me some ice cream?"

And would you believe it... he got up, and got me a bowl of ice cream!  How sweet is that?  I was happy to have him awake with me, but I was even happier to get that bowl of ice cream!  Funny thing is, I don't even usually enjoy ice cream all that much.

But I've been craving a lot of stuff lately.  And most of it, isn't the healthiest: Big Macs, french fries, pancakes and fully loaded nachos.  Especially those nachos. I've always heard that the body craves what the body needs, but I really don't see how overly processed cheese sauce and greasy ground beef could possibly benefit my baby.

I've also been craving some foods that are an absolute no-no during pregnancy.  Foods like sushi, red wine, beer, and brie.  Especially beer.  I'm not even a beer drinker.  But trust me.... these cravings I just refuse to give into.  Because right now, it's all about my unborn child.

And some cravings I won't give into because I'm worried about my post-baby body.  I'm really looking forward to fitting into my favorite pair of jeans again, buttoning up my blazers,  and appearing in public in a bathing suit.  Oh, and let's not even talk about the fact that I work on telelvision.  That's a whole other ball of wax.

So for now, I guess I'll have the nachos once a week, and that ice cream, occasionally.  Because if I'm going to "eat for two", I think I'd better do so responsibly.
