SOYLENT GREEN IS...

PRISON FOOD STORY ELICITS MOVIE REFERENCE

Nutra-loaf.

We did a story this morning on a group of prisoners in Vermont suing over the food. Apparently the unruly among them are served, as punishment, a nutritionally balanced but not very palatable substance called nutra-loaf.

It's a wheat bread with raw vegetables non-dairy cheese, and some tomato paste mixed in. Yummy.

That caused me to utter the phrase, "Soylent Green is people!"

It's a reference to a 1973 Charlton Heston film. It's a classic in the genre of "the future is really going to be crummy" films. Below is a plot outline offered on the movie website IMDB.com.

"A tale of Earth in despair in 2022. Natural food like fruits, vegetables, and meat among others are now extinct. Earth is overpopulated and New York City has 40 million starving, poverty stricken people. The only way they survive is with water rations and eating a mysterious food called Soylent. A detective investigates the murder of the president of the Soylent company. The truth he uncovers is more disturbing than the Earth in turmoil when he learns the secret ingredient of Soylent Green.
