Mercure UncutPut the Winner on the FieldBy John MercureAll this Brett Favre talk is making my head feel like it's about to explode. Let me say right up front that I think Favre has made a mess of this. I think he screwed up by prematurely announcing that he was retiring. I think he was genuine when he said it. But obviously he was premature. He has handled this whole thing poorly. But to me it's very simple. Put the best players on the field. Brett Favre gives us the best chance to win football games. If Favre wants to play then that QB position is his for the taking. I am so sick and tired of listening to these Ted Thompson apologists whine about how it's Aaron Rodgers turn. It's never anyone's 'turn' unless they've earned it. He hasn't earned anything. I have been here at the station for almost ten years. That doesn't mean it's my turn to anchor the 10p news or that it's my turn to be the News Director. There is no such thing as 'someone's turn. The object is to try to win football games. Favre gives us the best chance RIGHT NOW to do that. All these Aaron Rodgers band wagoners keep saying 'Rodgers gives us the best chance to make a real run for several years.' No one knows what he gives the best chance to do. Nothing in the future is guaranteed. Remember a few years ago when Bears fans were sure that their sorry team was poised to make a series of Super Bowl runs? It never happened. Remember just this year when the Patriots ran the table and everyone handed them the Super Bowl title before the game was played? That didn't quite work out for them, did it? There is no guarantee that Rodgers will ever lead us to anything. GO WITH WHAT GIVES YOU THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN NOW. It crack me up how everyone just assumes that... 1. Rodgers can stay healthy. he has done nothing to prove that. As a matter of fact every indicator has been to the contrary. 2. Rodgers can just step in and lead this team to another 14-2 record. Favre made those young receivers who they are. And I dare say that if anyone asked Donald Driver in the privacy of an off the record conversation who he would rather have under center on a third and seven with the season on the line, he would answer, "Favre." I'm not saying we should just hand Favre the job. But he should be allowed to compete for it. How can the Packer Brass not allow the 3rd or 4th best QB in the league compete for the job?!??!?!?!?! Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let hem both duke it out. Competition is good. That will never happen because Ted Thompson knows that his boy would get his butt kicked. Why would Packer fans not want competition for THE most important position on the football team? So the guy changed his mind... more than once. So what? He is under contract and should be allowed to compete for the starting job. A lot has been written about Favre's ego. I think it's Ted Thompson who should check his ego. This reminds me of the end of Michael Jordan's career. The GM for the Chicago Bulls, Jerry Krause, couldn't wait to get rid of the greatest basketball player ever. Krause had assembled all the pieces that surrounded Jordan as he won those six NBA titles. But he was NOT the one who had drafted Jordan. Krause couldn't wait to dump Jordan so that he could win a title without Jordan's help. Guess what? Krause never won another title and was run out of Chicago. Ted Thompson could soon be Jerry Krause.
