Early Holiday Cheer

By Carole Meekins

We have not had a speck of snow to stick to the ground so far this year, but already I am in the Christmas spirit. I am not sure why. Usually I do not begin to think about decorations until at least Thanksgiving. But for some reason, I have decked the halls much earlier. Maybe it's because many stores are replete with Santa stock. Perhaps it's the fact that several chains are already going by holiday hours, opening earlier and closing later. Maybe it's the radio stations that are already playing Christmas music around the clock. Whatever the reason, I began filling festive right after Halloween. I can remember some years, where even the sound of a Christmas carol got on my nerves. But perhaps my excitement of the season has to do with the fact that the older I get, I do not take moments for granted. I realize that there are no guarantees that we, or our loved ones, will be here tomorrow. This month I went to two funerals, and interviewed several people mourning a death. It's a stark reminder that we are all vulnerable to loss, and that no one gets out alive. That is why we must refuse to squander time. Every moment is precious, every day a blessing, and every season a gift. We owe it to ourselves, and to our friends and family to celebrate not only the season, but life itself.
