Just when you thought the world could not get any crazier, comes the case of this weirdo in California. The fact that he and his wife could keep and hide an 11-year-old girl for 18 years is mind boggling. Jaycee Lee Dugard was grabbed as she walked to her bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California. Her stepfather was in the driveway and saw the little girl disappear in a strange car. The fact that no one saw her is even more startling. Parole officers had visited Garrido's house over the years but no one ever noticed Jaycee Dugard, or the children she bore by her kidnappers. They were in the backyard in a makeshift campground. Incredible! Philip Garrido served time for kidnapping and rape in Nevada. He's out on parole and even wears a GPS tracking device. Sometimes it seems that we in society just put on blinders. We forget to use common sense, or react to our intuitions or hunches. That is sad. Had some authority at some point just had a little bit of instinct, they might have sensed something was not right. Or maybe a lot of people do not pay attention to that natural phenomenon. I do! I trust my instincts, and they have never failed me. Some call it women's intuition, I call it awareness. Too many people today walk around with blinders, not only about themselves but also about others and the world. For some, its selfishness, others sensory overload. I am convinced too many people do not take enough time to pause and reflect. I am a huge fan of solitude. It is key to not only enriching your mind, but keeps you alert and aware. You have a greater connection with yourself and the world around you. Plus, it can be invigorating. People with great awareness would have noticed something awry with this man. Kudos to the U-C Berkley campus security guard who paid attention. Hopefully we can learn from the story of that poor kidnapped girl. For her to stay under the radar for 18 years is not only sad, it's a travesty. Everyone who came in contact with that bizarre couple played a role in keeping this victim in bondage. They did so because they failed to be aware.
