Jay Leno Get's It!

By Carole Meekins

It was fun to hang out with Jay Leno in Chicago. Mike and I went to WMAQ's studios early Wednesday morning and interviewed the popular TV host. Leno was fun, down to earth, and as you might expect funny. He is on a whirlwind tour promoting his new show, which will no doubt feature a number of must-see moments. It was interesting when I asked him about his successful marriage to the same woman for almost three decades. Leno astutely notes, "Why would I go for a young woman who wants me now that I am famous. You and I both know what she wants me for." He's keenly aware that his appeal might have to do with his success, fame and fortune. Interesting, so many Hollywood men don't get that memo, and end up getting burned. It's nice to see someone who does not take himself so seriously, and understands that celebrity often attracts those with less than good intentions. Jay cracked us up when he said maybe his problem is low self-esteem. He even went so far as to say he's a big believer in low self esteem. It has kept him driven, and a hard worker. Most important he's a star that's in tune with reality. How refreshing. It's so common to see people in the limelight end up with an exaggerated sense of self importance. That's always sad, no matter how talented they may be. Ultimately, the false sense of grandeur burns itself out and that individual is left to face a harsh glare out of the spotlight. When they do, reality can bite. Nice to see a bona fide star with a healthy and grounded outlook. That's positively special.
