Sports Glance With LanceIT'S A BAD TIME TO BE IN SPORTSMILE, WAVE, US BANK, IRON ALL IN DANGERBy Lance AllanWow, where do you start with the wreckage that could be left of Milwaukee sports? Let's start with the Milwaukee Mile, where promoter Claude Napier has turned over control of all remaining 2009 contracts to the Wisconsin State Fair Park. Which means the government is back in business. That's not good. The staff is laid off, NASCAR is still owed about $1.8 million according to Don Walker and Dave Kallmann of JSOnline, the IRL still hasn't been paid, and the Matt Kenseth 100 next month is in serious jeopardy. Wow. With the racing history of the Mile, a second chance was warranted. But bite the hand that feeds you, especially NASCAR? Rusty Wallace and a track in Iowa are salivating over picking up the pieces...and if NASCAR leaves, it ain't comin' back, folks. We'll know a lot more if state government wants to play ball in the next 2 weeks. Then comes the Wave. The longest continuously running soccer franchise in North America, is on the edge of the cliff. On Monday, Head Coach Keith Tozer is going to urge someone to step up and save the day by buying the team and moving it to the NPSL. Owner Charlie Krause will explain that the current league, the XSL is going away. But it's the 10th round, and the team is on the verge of getting TKO'd. The U.S. Bank? It doesn't help matters that someone ripped up the 17th green, and pros might have only one or two pin placements in a couple of weeks because it's torn up so bad. This tournament needs a title sponsor, and a network (or something other than the Golf Channel and it's 0.4 ratings) to broadcast it, or it's DOA. And the Milwaukee Iron might not survive past its first season. All this gloom and doom trouble you sports fans out there? Emails at lallan@todaystmj4.com
