BREWERS FEVER HEATING UP

NOTES AM: AFTER MACHA

By Lance Allan

Some quick hitters after the Macha press conference:

GM Doug Melvin told me he's talked to CC Sabathia's agent twice in the past week, and he should present the Brewers offer today (Friday), somewhere in the 4-year, 100 million dollar range.  The $25 million dollar per year mark is impressive...but even Melvin admits it's hard to keep your own free agents.  Melvin admitted the CC Camp hasn't tipped their hand, but he thinks CC enjoying his time here and becoming friends with Mike Cameron, Bill Hall and Prince Fielder will give the Brewers an opportunity.

Ben Sheets filed for free agency, but Melvin says the Brewers will give him an initial offer.   Melvin wanted Macha hired and free agent offers in before he leaves for the GM meetings.

Macha familiar with roster shuffling, and developing young talent.  So if the Brewers are serious about trading Prince Fielder and/or J.J. Hardy, Macha can go with the flow.  And while Melvin never talks about specific players, he seemed open to listening to major trade talks.

Interim Manager Dale Sveum will return as either the third base, or surprise surprise, hitting coach.  Bill Castro, Ed Sedar and Marcus Hanel are all back.  Mike Maddux will decide as soon as today if he stays in Milwaukee, or goes to the Texas Rangers.

Melvin wouldn't tip his hand on if he'll pick up the option for Mike Cameron.  He has 5 days after the end of the World Series, meaning something must be done by Monday.
