Craig Koplien: Weather or NotBarneveld TornadoBy Craig KoplienMonday, June 8 is the 25th anniversary of The Barneveld Tornado.
It touched down at 1241am on June 8th 1984, stayed on the ground for 59 minutes, and traveled 35 miles.
Barneveld is west of Madison in Iowa county. It may be the most memorable Wisconsin tornado of most people’s lifetimes, athough the 1996 Oakfield tornado in Fond du Lac county was more recent.
The National Weather Service has posted lots of information here… http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mkx/?n=barneveldf5tornado
Here are the highlights:
9 people killed and another 200 injured.
About 90 percent of Barneveld was destroyed. 93 homes were destroyed and 64 were damaged.
17 of 18 businesses and public buildings were destroyed.
This tornado was rated a F5 on the Fujita Scale for tornado intensity…the highest rating that a tornado can achieve.
Barneveld is the second costliest tornado, based on official damage costs, in Wisconsin history with total damage estimated at $40 million. The "Oakfield Tornado" on July 18, 1996 is the costliest tornado in state history, with total estimated damage costs at $40.4 million. However, if you adjust for inflation to 2009 dollars, the Barneveld tornado becomes the costliest tornado at $82.1 million.
Barneveld was 1 of 7 tornadoes to hit Wisconsin shortly before and after midnight June 8.
