Craig Koplien: Weather or NotWinter Weather OutlookBy Craig Koplien
email: ckoplien@todaystmj4.com
The latest Winter Outlook maps below from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center indicate a 50 percent chance that temperatures will average above normal in Wisconsin. At the same time, there is about a 33 percent chance that temperatures over the winter will average near normal, and a 16 percent chance that they will average below normal. The outlook for precipitation shows equal chances of above, below, or near normal precipitation, which means there is no clear climate signal pointing to one scenario more than another. All of this would suggest this winter may be milder and possibly less snowy winter than last winter. However, that is far from a certainty. This does not mean we will escape big snowstorms or a blast of arctic air from time to time. It just means that when averaged over the season, temperatures could be above normal. And, there is a great deal of uncertainty as to which way the precipitation amounts will trend. I know, I know, there's a lot of gray-area here. But that's how long-range forecasts like this go. Predicting the weather months in advance lies somewhere between challenging and impossible. ![]()
