Craig Koplien: Weather or NotFavre's Latest Move Makes Me SickBy Craig Koplien

By now I'm sure you've heard. According to a report, New York Jets QB Brett Favre talked with Detroit Lions coaches prior to Lions game against the Green Bay Packers. The report, from Fox Sports' Jay Glazer , says that Favre gave Detroit coaches information about the Packers...information that Favre hoped would help the Lions beat the Packers. After reading the report, listening to the denial, and reading what others have to say about the situation, I believe it's true. And therefore, my relationship with Favre is over. Now, the love affair had already ended last summer when I found out that 3 weeks after Favre's tearful, "I don't have anything left to give" retirement, he called the Packers and wanted back in. Then, a few days after that, he called again and said "never mind". ![]() Still, even after he tried to stick it to the Packers by finding some way to get traded to the Vikings, I left myself room to remember the good times he gave us. And I promised myself that we he eventually retired for good, I'd welcome him back to the Packer family...and look forward to when he would be inducted into the Packer Hall of Fame. ![]() That's changed now. The greatest Packer of all-time...is now so bitter...so delusional...so full of spite...that he wants to help other teams beat the Packers. Unforgivable. What type of spurned-lover, screwed-up kind of a person does this?!? You're mad at Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy for not letting you play with the Packers...after you retired...twice!...we get that. But how about getting over it? How about taking some responsibility? You're more responsible for the fact that you're a Jet now than anyone. You don't want to say anything positive about the Packers? Fine. But how about moving on and shutting up? Or how about getting some therapy if you can't? Packer fans thought they "knew" Favre. Beyond all the stuff he did on the field, Packers fans thought their QB all of those years was a Packer for life...a fantastic teammate...a guy who would do anything for anybody...an all-around good guy. Nope. We don't know these guys who play on our teams. And we sure don't know Favre anymore. Treason. Now, it's pretty widely accepted that when a player moves to a new team, and that new team plays against the old team, the player tells his new team stuff about the old team. (Follow all that?) ![]() But it's completely different when a player who moves to a new team provides information to a 3rd-party-team about how to beat his old team. I know, there's no rule against it. That's why the league can't and shouldn't take any action against Favre. But it's just not cool. It's stinkin' awful, in fact. This tells me that Favre is clearly obsessed with getting revenge against Thompson and/or McCarthy. But being cheesed-off at the decision-makers in Green Bay is one thing. But what Favre did here was try to sink all of his former teammates...and that's a whole different level. I know he doesn't care about us fans...but what kind of a donkey does that to former teammates? ![]() I know, I know, whatever Favre told the Lions sure didn't seem to work. But that's beside the point. The point is Favre's intent. His intent was to help the Lions beat the Packers. That makes me sick. ![]() You know what's telling...there's not one player on Favre's new team (Jets) or his old team (Packers) who has come out and said, "Geez, that doesn't sound like Brett...he'd never do anything like that". In fact, most seem to be trying hard not to say, "Oh yeah, doesn't surprise me one bit. He's one vindictive SOB." LeRoy Butler even said that there are "lots of other stories" about Favre that are going to come out...and that "this is only the beginning". I still have my Brett Favre jersey at home. And I'm going to hold on to it for a while yet while more info comes out about this whole situation. But unless I hear something soon that changes my feeling about this, I'm going to have some sort of ceremonial trashing of the jersey. I know, pretty childish, huh? Whatever, it's happening. Bottom line is that going out of your way to hurt the team you used to be on, for spite..and revenge...and to re-charge your own ego...casts you in a really bad light. Makes you look like a jerk, really. My favorite football player ever...is a jerk. And he is not my favorite anymore. |
