Weekend Get Away

By Brian Gotter

So my dad drove up from NE Oklahoma on Wednesday...he likes to drive...and by the time I got home from work he was already at the house.  We went to dinner and I showed him all my progress on my projects around the house.  You gotta show off to your dad and make him proud.

We were on the road by Thursday morning and were golfing before noon.  It was drizzling, windy, cloudy and cold, but we had lunch at the turn and on the back nine it was beautiful.  The wind died down, the sun was out and it warmed up.  We were going to fish after golf, but decided to chill at my uncle's house.  We decided to not go up north because of the weather and the bad fishing last year...our favorite lake is being speared out and the big fish no longer exist.

My aunt Bonnie came home from work and we had already grilled out enough food for an army and it was delicious.  I was beat and it was early to bed.  This was not roughing it in the forest like last year, this was sleeping on a comfortable bed, hot showers and a recliner while we watched the Brewers.

The weather was not that great all weekend...but it had its moments.  See I don't control the weather because if I did, it would have been sunny, no wind and 75.  Friday was golf all day.  It was cold when we started in the morning.  We played at Royal St. Patricks near Kaukauna.  It turned out to be a sunny and mild day, but it was too windy for fishing...so golf it was...not complaints here.

Friday night was Fish Fry at a supper club in my aunt and uncles town....delicious.

Despite crappy weather Saturday, we braved the elements and went out on Lake Winnebago near Menasha.  It was raining at times, and it was windy and cold.  Winds had to be up to 30mph on the lake and it was rough.  We were being pushed all around and I felt beat up.  Eight hours later and just one small mouth bass, we gave up.  At least the sun came out and we could take off the coats and long underwear.  Man was it cold on the lake...weather sucked!

Saturday evening we golfed again with my aunt and as we walked up the last hole the lake breeze kicked in and the temperature dropped 20 degrees instantly.  It had actually turned out to be a nice evening after a miserable day, but it turned cold fast. I tried to stay up late, but all that fresh air on the lake and golf course caught up to me...it was early to bed.

There was frost on the ground when we woke up Sunday morning and we opted not to fish...instead back to another golf course in De Pere.  Our fishing and golfing weekend became mainly a golfing weekend and it was awesome.  I am working out some of the winter kinks in my game.  I will become great at golf one of these days.  After a could start, the sun was out and the wind was light...what a great morning for golf.  We were back to my aunt and uncles by 1pm, grilled brats and then my dad and I were on our way back to my house.  As we drove down I-43 the temp dropped from the 70s to the upper 40s..darn lake.  We were home by 4:30 and as my dad napped and tried to warm up...he is no longer a Wisconsin boy after living here most of his life...he is used to southern living and warmth now..I mowed the lawn.

Tina and Ali were getting back from Florida later that night so it was just my dad and I Sunday evening...perfect.  Monday my dad and I golfed in the Chili's MACC Fund Golf Open...yes more golf.  I will do anything for the MACC Fund and was happy to be asked to be a "celebrity" golfer.  It was great that my dad I was able to golf and be in our group as well.  We had so much fun despite the weather.  It was 81 and humid when we started...It was warm and sweaty out.  By the 6th hole, the cold front passed and the winds howled and the temps dropped into the lower 50s...it was cold.  We went from sweating to sweatshirts and cold in 10 minutes.

My dad left early this morning...it was a great weekend.  I see my dad a few times each year and I am beginning to notice that he is getting older....that bothers me a lot.  He has bad knees and you can tell it bothers him to walk at times...otherwise he seems great.    It just bothers me to notice him getting older for the first time in my life..he is my dad.
