Welcome Back, GotterTwo Things I Have Never UnderstoodBy Brian GotterOK, so there are more than two things..I have a lot of questions about life, but two big questions have always bugged me. First, why do we not have playoffs in college football? The polls and the BCS suck! There is always so much discussion as to which team is the best and it never seems final..one or two teams always feel cheated. But if we got rid of the polls, what would sportscasters talk about all the time? A playoff is too easy. My Oklahoma Sooners won on Saturday beating up Nebraska easily but they dropped from #4 to #6...weird. The second question...why does the Presidential Election use electoral votes? They are not used in primaries and for any other election for Congress, Senate Governor or Mayor. What is wrong with just using our votes? That way every vote counts. I hate that these elections are called well before some states are even done voting. Last night they decided to wait until 10pm when all the west coast polls closed...that was nice. But before one vote was counted out west, the networks called Obama the winner. It is a race to see who can call it first. That back fired on all the networks in 2000. I have decided the networks like the Electoral Votes because they don't have to wait for all the votes to be counted..that would take a few days and they want to get some sleep. Ooops, I have another question...what is up with calling a state for one candidate after 1% of the votes have been counted? How do they know that the next 1% of the votes counted are not for the other guy. It seems very risky to me. Last night New York called for Obama after 1%...Obama had 61%, McCain 39%. It is a convincing lead, but there is still 99% of the vote to be counted. Locally, I went to bed last night with one Senator winning the race, but there were still many votes to count. I woke up and the other Senator is now winning. Being a scientist, I would be very nervous making a decision with so little data...especially 1%..but it works more than not so they must know something we don't. |
