Brewers Thriller

Brian Gotter

For the second time this week, the Brewers beat the Pirates with a walk off home run...last night was Ryan Braun's grand slam in the 10th inning.  I was jumping all around the living room while trying not to wake up Ali.  It was the first grand slam of the season for the Brewers...last year they had 8.

I called Tina on the way home last night to see if she wanted to go to the game.  She got online and there were tickets available but after thinking about it for a few minutes we decided to stay home.  It has been a busy week with the Packer game on Sunday and staying up late, charity events and meetings and work.  Plus, Ali wanted to go for a walk, play on her swing set, ride her battery operated 4-wheeler and have pizza.  We let her decide...since she was at a Brewer game the other night, she also wanted to stay home and play.  It ended up being a great night and e still got to watch the exciting game from our comfortable couch.

While it is exciting and the Brewers find themselves tied with the Mets for the Wild Card, my gut says the Brewers don't make it.  My heart says yes, but mu gut says no.  Before you chase me down here are my reasons.

It is the final series of the season and there is a lot of pressure on this team...and we have seen how they handle pressure this season.  To top it off, our hated neighbors from 80 miles south are in Miller Park this weekend.  This had the makings of a great series to finish the season and win the Division, instead we are fighting to make the Wild Card spot after choking away most of the games this month.  In addition, the stadium will not be packed full of Brewer fans...there will be thousands of Cub fans.  That takes a lot of magic and energy out of the stadium.

In addition, while the Brewers have won 4 in a row, they struggled to get hits and runs against a week Pittsburgh team...they could have easily lost all of those games.  They did not, which says something about the Brewers, but they have not looked strong and now the Cubs are in town.  The Cubs have nothing to play for except for spoiler.  It sucks that we had to cheer for the Cubs the last few days while they played New York, but even then they could not help us.  They gave up 3 runs in the 9th last night to let the Mets win and stay tied with the Brewers.  Thanks Chicago.  If the Brewers find a way to win this weekend, I have a feeling they will have to play a tie breaking game in New York...go figure, 162 games ant it could take one more to decide who goes to the playoffs.

With all that said, I love my Brewers and I want this town to explode with excitement.  I remember the 1982 season and all the energy this town had...it has been 26 years in the making.  Unfortunately we may not know the outcome by Sunday afternoon...there is a huge storm system that threatens to rain out the Mets and Phillies games this entire weekend.
